      Wesswood Vandal QLD

Bolagamy Valour X Thourbred

A boy we hadn't heard about for awhile - with his first owners who bought him at only 2 months and showed him as a youngsters, he was champ and Supreme in many led events in NSW. When they picked Vandal up in their truck, they were to be at Dubbo show so Vandal was going to spend a small amount of time there, when the ramp was down they couldn't get him out for a few hours, he decided not to come down the ramp. Vandal was QLD Newcomer Small Galloway a couple of years ago. Now with new owners Tyler Harris, Vandal has been a trusted mount and recently was at the 2008 QLD Arabian Challenge Show where he was awarded Novice Champion Derivative. Vandals mum, a Lunchtime granddaughter only produced him as with her next pregnancy the mare carried to mid term and died along side her  triplets. Very sad day.

Spell has been turning heads.  When Dale Plumb seen Spell come out the stables in WA, he said to me, now that's a horse! we agree........

 Wesswood The Boyfriend WA

Wesswood The Boyfriend!!!  he has been the most delightful boy we could have ever asked for, and we truly appreciate the wonderful opportunity you gave us to purchase him as a two year old.  We haven't done lot of competition with him, we have just taken it very slowly, he's been to pony club, he's been out on rides and just enjoyed life with us, this photo is at the Manji Ag show where Emma rode him to Reserve Champion Rider to Annabelle Drexel riding Flirting.. measured at 14.3 3/4 .We had considered leasing him to a very approved home for a year while Emma is studying and also working part time but this we are very hesitant with as we know they can end up in the wrong hands and he deserves the best.

 COPPER SULPHATE

To all people interested, I have had emails and phone calls regarding copper sulphate. If a piece of copper is put in a tub of water or trough it wont make any difference as the copper has to be half in the water to be able to oxidize to produce what we know as that blue stuff.  A bit like what we see in lots of homes in WAs bathroom shower heads. Copper sulphate is obtainable at your local feed stores and if you introduce it (not as to kill your animal as that wont happen) but to get them used to the taste as it isn't that pleasant. 1/4 teaspoon and increase up to a teaspoon and more for heavier horses. If the rule is applied and fed with Dolomite you will see a difference in your horse. For a little money buy the book Natural Horse Care by Pat Coleby. It makes perfect sense to feed natural minerals and if you do the research you will find that horses can tolerate copper very well. I also do not promote this product for a company, I use it and love it and promote it for the horse. At the same time mine are fed equilibrium with the extra copper and dolomite. I think the interest is great and I know the 80 odd year old woman Pat has had more than enough experience and certainly wouldn't write a book including copper and its benefits. Id love to hear other peoples views that are using it. You have more chance killing your horse with processed feeds than copper. When the horse doesn't need it it will be left in the feed bin but the next time it might not be. Start on the neighbours horse if your not sure (only kidding). Good luck.

I know this might bore some people and others will find very interesting. The below article is a must read. As we feed copper sulphate to our horses to prevent many fungal and bacterial infections, including seedy toe, sacoids, ringworm, skin sores proud flesh etc and the difference in the horses well being when fed copper has to be seen to be believed. As copper is getting so expensive and harder to get, mine had been off it for 3 months and noticeably see the difference in their coats and well being for the worst. My black horses back on copper are blacker, chestnuts deeper. Pat Coleby states if they are fed enough copper proud flesh wont form, that is true and worming is non existent as worms wont live in a copper environment if the quantities are fed right. A yearling colt looked terrible (hadn't been on copper for 3 months) coat stark as for the prevailing cold winds and dull. Reluctantly I wormed him thinking that is what it was but his droppings were clean. After a couple of weeks back on the copper his coat deepened sat flat and he looked a different paddock pony. Now into our sixth year feeding copper I can confidently say copper works for us. This isn't my study, this has been in diets of horses for many many years. It is the unknown we are afraid of. Gone could be infections at studs if they maintained a diet with Copper and Calcium and less antibiotics'. The below article has created more excitement regarding the copper for some and how important a role it is going to play in the future.  More on the Accessories page.

Copper Now Approved To Kill Bacteria On Hospital Surfaces
27 March 2008

SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--Copper is used the world over because it's one of the best conductors of electricity. But with the help of the largest producers of the red metal, it could also end up being widely used to fight infections.

Miners such as Chilean state copper giant Corporacion Nacional del Cobre, or Codelco, and BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) - both part of the the International Copper Association Ltd., or ICA - are promoting copper's anti-microbial properties in the hopes of creating new markets for the metal.

That cause got a boost this week as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved copper for anti-bacterial uses in hospital surfaces.

According to the ICA, potential copper demand for the public health purposes could reach 500,000 tons a year.
"The (demand) potential here is the same as having found another Chuquicamata in terms of production," said Victor Perez, president of the Procobre trade group and Codelco's marketing director. He was referring to the world's biggest copper mine in terms of size, which has been in commercial operation for over 90 years.

Amid the threat of substitution in light of sky-high metals prices, miners in recent years have been looking for ways to find, develop and promote new markets and create additional demand.

"We copper producers are very far away from the final-use market," Codelco's corporate manager for market development, Jurgen Leibbrandt, recently said, adding that the company, through the ICA, aims to support new copper uses.

Research has shown that fungi, viruses or bacteria, including such troublemakers as E. coli and golden staph, resting on uncoated, oxidized copper surfaces die in a matter of hours. These same microbes continue to thrive when left on stainless steel, brass or silver-coated surfaces, according to Codelco. E. coli is one of the main sources of food poisoning throughout the world, while an infection with golden staph, or Staphylococcus aureus, can be deadly.

Codelco is putting is money where its mouth is and will begin clinical trials at a company hospital in Calama later this year, where it will install copper-coated surfaces to cut down on infections, Perez said Thursday.

If the clinical trials - which will be conducted with the same protocols that have been used at several other hospitals as part of the EPA's evaluation - are successful, Codelco hopes to convince the local Health Ministry to implement copper use at state hospitals, a person at Codelco recently said.

But shining red hospital surfaces aren't the only things consumers will be seeing in the future.
One of Codelco's clients is a company called Cupron. It uses copper-coated fabrics and plastics to produce products such as towels, pillowcases, socks, underwear, cosmetic brushes, filters and disposable hospital garments.

According to its Cupron's Chief Executive Jeff Gabbay, the oxidized copper can kill microbes through any one of 16 different ways, such as attacking the cell membrane or different structures within the cell. That could ensure that bacteria or viruses don't become resistant, as some have with antibiotics or other types of medications.

U.S. Armed Forces' personnel are already using copper-coated socks and underwear as standard issue, Gabbay said. He added his company was currently trying to develop fabrics for uniforms that would protect wounds from being infected. (we know it kills proud flesh on the wounds of horses and leaves the healthy tissues alone)

The ICA now aims for copper to be approved to combat other microbial infections as well as for other applications.
The salmon farming industry could see copper wire cages that could eradicate the infections currently plaguing it, and air conditioning units could be outfitted with copper tubing to cut down on air-borne infections.

As optimistic as the miners are, world-wide copper applications in hospitals and clinics won't likely be seen for another five years, ICA Latin America regional director Miguel Angel Alarcon said.

The first email I received from Peta was to let me know about how her horse and husband were doing on MSM. Both suffered from arthritis and her husband had noticeable improve within that week, to the extent he cut down his pain killers. The dressage instructor also noticed the difference in Peta's horse and now wants to put her stallion on it as an preventative. And now with the recent update,

Hi Tanya,
MSM - Why have we not heard of it before? My husband has had Psoriasis for 20 years next month which covers his body from his armpits down as well as his arms and on Saturday he pointed out that a patch about the size of a saucer on his lower ribs has disappeared all of a sudden after all these years, he is waiting with baited breath to see if the rest will disappear as well though it has almost stopped itching and has faded from being bright red to pale pink. He is very optimistic and telling everyone how good it is. I also have been singing it's praises many people and have been asked to get some for some friends who do not have access to the internet.
Have a lovely day.
Peta and Allan WA

To order MSM go to the Accessories' page and look for Steve and his  number. The number is also in the Horse Deals in the Health Section.

I would also like for those that don't know, 'to know' about the good old "Berg Oil" It used to be very popular when I was younger (much) and seemed to disappear as other replaced it or just forgotten about. It is without a doubt that this brilliant product should be in everyone's fridge. Colic most of the time is spasmodic and there are  many reasons colic can come on, change of weather, stress, gorging, change of feed, and the list goes on for miles. Over the years when a colic has arisen,  and I have given 10mls of Berg Oil it has worked on every occasion, I don't think this is lucky, I know it works. I do listen for gut noises and hearing the gurgling assures me things are happening inside, however if there isn't, this is when vetenarian attention is a must.

A few years ago I had an agister (pacer) who went down frantically and in the most peculiar ways, dripping with sweat, never witnessed anything like it, I rang the vet. Meanwhile I give her Berg Oil and a huge dose of Vitamin C and 1 syringe of veg. oil. Les diagnosed the horse and said unfortunately the mare had flipped her intestine over itself and is unlikely to recover and only has a 20 % chance of survival. I  tied her up for a few hours, went back untied her and went to bed. I went over the next morning thinking I was to have a dead horse, but no, she was here to stay. Les was amazed she survived, maybe this time she was lucky, yet I think in this case the Vitamin C had a big part to play. Berg Oil and Vitamin C (injectable) can be purchased at the local feed stores.

The other good old remedy is the "Flints Medicated Oil" another must in the vet box.

Little niece Denim Star at Pony Club full of confidence now we have grass reins on her beautiful pony.

We have taken the opportunity to photograph the beautiful broodmares who have had their children attached as lack of facilities to wean them, and all being around the 16 month mark. Now all settled and weaned the mares and I can finally have some peace,  regardless I have also observed the growth and less stress and trainability of these youngsters. Even though they all have been patted since birth none have had a halter on. For the trip over the Nullarbor to SA they followed their Mums up the ramp obediently.  With all of them recently accepting halters like they have always worn them, the leading I thought would be a bit harder to yield, totally the opposite, very willing and with one no stress lesson the leading was accepted. Even though they are still boxed they take it in turns to come out of the day and have a cavort around and inspect everything in the shed from feed to anything in the shed...including trotting off down to see the stallion and then making the exit home and into the safety of their box. The conditioning and exposure has really shone through. The saying of the mares milk after three months doesn't benefit the youngster might be true, but to see well conformed youngsters without poddy bellies, on their mothers at this age wil see the weaning here take place at similar ages, pending no hiccups. We have always weaned 6 and up to 10mths and still find the youngsters more stressed and more likely to receive injury and takes more looking after being babies. Young babies being weaned still need a role model to teach them socialization even if it were to be a reliable old gelding who teaches them about pecking orders, and all the things they need to know. Isolation for a young baby weaned into a box would have to give them some discomfort and set backs socially and mentally.

To End the Confusion

Pure Caste was  released to the Klantes, WA, in May 07 and  have prior bred 4 ET babies. Pure Caste was shown by Chris and Vicki Lawrie through Tanya Dudley where she was undefeated in three years. Her progeny Wesswood Pure Class, Wesswood Hi Caste, Wesswood Caste A Spell (Exported UK) were shown with the Dudley's and Wesswood Sophisticaste left as a 2 yo, and recently bought back for the now WhistleJackets Stud. Wesswood High Caste was Champion RP 1 year old of the year under Mr David Puddock and not reg welsh as stated. High Caste is been shown by Jodee Hadley. Hopefully we can clear the confusion which is often asked about. The Dudley's and Wesswood moved to Perth in 2001 the Klantes moved over a couple of years later and wanted to breed again so they registered their Stud Wesswoods with the S on the end. The 4 on the 4 sale page in the National RP mag were not Registered by Wesswood but infact carry the Wesswoods prefix.

Please accept and I apologise for the confusion. Wesswood has finished an era and Whistlejackets has replaced Wesswood as for the continued confusion and Wesswoods is in WA with Pure Caste. Tanya Dudley
